Intuition operates through the higher "soul" chakras (heart and upwards). The soul is the embodiment of love. To be intuitive is to be loving and peaceful. Mind, body, and soul, are seen as one integrated whole.
The 1st chakra (base - root of spine) is animal passion (or instinct) and groundedness.
The 2nd chakra (belly button) is the emotional centre.
The 3rd chakra (solar plexus) is the intellectual centre (the lower will, or ego).
The 4th chakra (centre of chest) is the holistic centre, the heart.
Now is the time to raise our awareness from the mind (3rd chakra) to the heart (4th chakra). In psychic / cosmic / spiritual terms, the rational mind is below the heart, and not located in the head (it uses the brain for processing, but so do the emotions, the nervous system, and all parts of the body).
Most spiritual paths focus on devotion, i.e. the heart, on being loving and intuitive. The vast majority of mankind operate mainly at level 2, the emotions. Some poor souls will be stuck on level 1 (animal), generally those with mental illness of some kind. There is a sizable minority of the human race who have a developed rationality, ie intellect - they have stepped up to level 3, and (being selfish-ego-centred) think that they are superior: we see this with many academics, scientists, doctors...
Devotional spirituality takes you directly from levels 2 or 3, to level 4, the (truly superior) level of the heart - and you become loving and giving, intuitive, soul driven.
There are higher levels still:
The 5th Chakra (throat) is the center of artistic creativity and communication i.e. right brain stuff (level 3 is left brain stuff) - this chakra often functions well on people who are emotion-centered (level 2), but will function better if they are heart-centred (level 4).
The 6th Chakra is the third eye, the spiritual will, the center of spiritual power. Too much stimulation of this chakra, while neglecting the heart chakra, will cause an imbalance of too much spiritual power and not enough love. Love is required first, as the basis for spiritual power.
The 7th chakra, the crown (top of the head) is the divine center, the link to God, the angels, heaven , however you see divinity... When you become enlightened, spiritual power floods into you through this chakra, through your whole body, and you redistribute it out of the other chakras, primarily the heart (love) and the third eye (power). Healers intuitively channel this power through minor chakras in their hands, into the bodies of the sick.
Heart centered is the only way to be - the heart chakra is the middle chakra and functions as the spiritual heart. But to be truly and stably heart centered, your upper chakras need to be working as well as your lower ones. In the state of true enlightenment all seven chakras are all equal powered, and they fuse together into one line of spiritual power from head to tail - you are then in full balance and harmony, a truly advanced spiritual being (wow!).
And no, I have not got there yet, but I have had glimpses...
